Tacloban City is located on the northeastern coast of Leyte. It is the regional center and primary gateway to
Eastern Visayas Region. It is bounded on the north by the town of Babatngon, on the east by San Juanico Strait, on the
south by the town of Palo, and on the west by the towns of sta. Fe, Alangalang and San Miguel. It has an area of 201.7 square
kilometers. The city's topography is characterized by a broad flatland interrupted only by a few hills
The city is accessible by air and sea. By air, it is one hour flight from Manila,
25 minutes from Cebu, and 45 minutes from Davao City. By Boat, Tacloban
can be reached in 20 hours from Manila and 10 hours from Cebu. Travelling to this city by land takes around 24 hours drive from Manila or 10 hours from Davao City.
On December 18, 2008, Tacloban was converted from a component city to a highly urbanized city after its ratification
by a majority of the votes cast in the plebiscite.
Majority of the people speak the Waray dialect. Roman Catholic is the predominant religion. The city celebrates
the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival every June 29th to showcase the unique culture of the people of Leyte.
