Mabuhay! Welcome online to Northern Mindanao!
Geography
Northern Mindanao Region, also known as Region 10, is composed of 5 provinces namely:
Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao Del Norte, Misamis Occidental,
and Misamis Oriental. As its name implies, the region is located in the northern part
of Mindanao Islands. It is bounded on the north by Bohol Sea, on the east by Caraga Region
and Davao Del Norte Province,
on the south by the provinces of North Cotabato and Lanao Del Sur,
and on the west by Zamboanga Peninsula Region. Its terrain
is mostly hilly and mountainous with flat lands in the coastal areas. Bukidnon Province is mostly plateau, hills, and
high mountains. The highest peak is Mt. Kitanglad in Bukidnon with its peak of 2,379 meters. Other high mountains in the
region are the 2,425-meter high Mt. Malindang in Misamis Occidental and the 2,286-meter Mt. Kalatungan, also in Bukidnon
Province. The mighty Pulangi River and its many tributaries drain much of Bukidnon.
Climate is characterized by not very pronounced seasons with November to April as relatively dry and the
rest of the year as relatively wet. The region, like the rest of Mindanao Islands, lies outside the path of typhoons.
People
Northern Mindanao is home to many Cultural groups. Majority of the inhabitants are Cebuanos and Boholanos
while the rest are Waray-Warays, Tagalogs, Ilocanos, Agtas, Maranaos, Manobos, Subanons, and Bagobos.
Economic Profile
Region 10 is the most progressive region in Mindanao and one of the most industrialized regions in the Philippines.
It has the highest Gross Regional Domestic Product among the regions of Mindanao (see comparison).
Cagayan De Oro city in Misamis Oriental is one of the fastest growing urban areas in the country
and Iligan City in Lanao Del Norte has long been an important industrial enclave in Mindanao.
The region is home to the largest iron and steel plant and the largest pineapple cannery in the country. Other
products manufactured in the region are cement, chemicals, rubber goods, fertilizer, flour, and starch. If plans push through,
the PHIVIDEC industrial estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, established in the 1970's, will soon be reinvigorated by
new foreign investors.
Agricultural production in the region consists of palay, corn, pineapple, coconut, banana, sugar, rubber, and coffee. Other
products include poultry, hog, cattle, and fish.
