Welcome to the Center of Muslim Culture in the Philippines! The Islamic City of Marawi lies on the northern
shoreline of Lake Lanao, the deepest and second largest inland body of water in the country. Its neigboring towns are Saguiaran and Kapai in the north, Bubong in the east, and
Marantao in the west. Its location provides a wide view of Lake Lanao. Its terrain is charactrized by rolling landscape
The seat of the provincial government of Lanao Del Sur, it is also the
commercial and educational center of Lanao Del Sur. The city has a total land area of 87.6 square kilometers, a
little more than thrice the size of Manila which has only 25 square kilometers. It is
composed of 96 barangays, most of which are considered rural areas.
More than 90% of the population are Muslims. The city is home to many beautiful mosques and its street are lined
with small shops selling a wide variety of Muslim articles. Maranao is the dominant dialect although Enlish, Tagalog and cebuano are
widely used.
Agriculture is the main economic activity although wholesale and retail trading is dominant in the city center.
Rice, corn, and coconut are the primary farm products. Cottage industries produce brasswares, woven textile, wooden articles, and
other handicrafts.
