Many People consider Lino Brocka as the greatest Filipino film director. All of his films are critically acclaimed and won many awards, not to mention their being on the blockbuster list. His movie 'Insiang' is considered his masterpiece and it was the first Filipino film to be shown at Cannes Film Festival.

Lino is the founder of CAP (Concerned Artists of the Philippines), an organization that participated in many anti-government rallies against the Marcos regime. In fact, most of his films have political undertones. It is said that his film 'Macho Dancer' was smuggled abroad to evade the government's censorship.

Though he was born in Sorsogon, he grew up in Nueva Ecija where his mother transferred the family after his father died early while living in Bicol. When he graduated in high school, he garnered many awards and won a scholarship to the University of the Philippines. There at UP, he became a friend of Behn Cervantes whom he met at the Dramatic Club.

Lino's formal entry to the world of showbiz was when he joined the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) which was founded by Cecille Guidote (husband of former Senator Heherson Alvarez) in 1969.
