Lamitan is located on the northeastern part of the island province of Basilan. It is bounded on the north by the Basilan Strait,
on the east by the municipality of Tuburan, on the south by Tipo-Tipo town and on the west by Isabela City.
Most of the city area are rural areas which are either forested or devoted to agriculture. Lamitan is one of the
16 municipalities whose cityhood status is being questioned at the Supreme Court.
With an area of 354 square kilometers, Lamitan is politically subdivided into 45 barangays.
