Located on the northern part of Mindoro Island specifically in Oriental Mindoro Province, Puerto Galera is one of the premier tourist destinations of the Philippines. Its name is derived from the Spanish for "port of galleons" being a port of call for vessels in the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade during the Spanish regime. The town has an area of 247.9 square kilometers most of which are forest lands. Mountains dominate the town's landscape. It has many sheltered coves, winding roads and steep ravines. In fact, Puerto Galera Bay is considered as one of the most beautiful bays in the world.

The town is accessible from Manila by land transportation to the port of Batangas City and then take an hour boat ride or fastcraft to Puerto Galera. It can also be reached by air via Calapan City airport and then take a one-and-a-half hour drive to the town. It is also possible for travellers to bring their private vehicles because the town has a Roll On, Roll Off port.

The town is blessed with white sand beaches, superb diving spots, and abundant marine life, and lush tropical vegetation. Hundreds of resorts and eating places are found along its wonderful beaches. The town is home to Ponderosa Golf and Country Club.

Being a prime resort town, Puerto Galera offers opportunities in tourism-related businesses such as world-class hotels, resorts, and other establishments that cater to the needs of travellers. Entreprenuers can put up shops to sell souvenir items. Retirement villages can also thrive in this town because of its natural attractions and peaceful environment.
