Formerly called Pagagawan, Datu Montawal is a 1st class municipality located in the eastern part of Maguindanao Province. It is bounded on the north by , on the east by , on the south by , and on the west by . It has a total land area of square kilometers and is politically subdivided into 11 barangays.
