Biography of Diosdado Macapagal
-> The 9th president of the Philippines (1961 - 1965)
-> Born on September 28, 1910 in Lubao, Pampanga to poor parents
-> Known as the poor boy from Lubao
-> Parents are Urbano Macapagal who was a poet and Romana Pangan Macapagal a schoolteacher
-> Married twice: first to Purita De La Rosa and then to Eva Macaraeg; had 4 children including Gloria Macapagal Arroyo - the 14th President
-> Studied at UP and at the Philippine Law School
-> Finished law degree at UST and topped the Bar Exam with a grade of 89.95
-> Obtained Masters of Laws in 1941 at UST
-> Finished Doctor of Civil Law degree in 1947 and Ph. D. in Economics in 1957
-> Worked as a legal assistant to President Manuel L. Quezon in Malacañang Palace
-> In 1943, Macapagal lost his first wife, Purita de la Rosa, to malnutrition
-> In 1946 he married Evangelina Macaraeg with whom he had two children, Gloria and Diosdado Jr.
-> Won as Congressman in 1949 and in 1953
-> Elected as Vice-President under the Liberal Party with presidential Candidate Jose Yulo who lost
-> Elected as President in 1961
-> Implemented Agrarian Reform Law
-> In 1964, changed the date of Independence Day from July 4 to June 12
-> Became President of the 1971 Constitutional Convention
-> Died of heart failure on April 21, 1997 in Makati at age 87
