Calayan is a 3rd class municipality which is a group of islands located between the tip of northern Luzon Islands
and Batanes group of islands. The major islands included in its territory are Calayan, Camaguin, Babuyan, and Dalupiri.
It has a total land area of 494 square kilometers and is politically subdivided into 12 barangays.
The town proper is situated around 57 nautical miles north of the town of Aparri.
